This morning, we left Bedford, Indiana and made it to Parkersburg, West Virginia - about 320 miles. Here's the Ohio River. It is actually a lot bigger than the Mississippi, at least at the point we crossed it. All the rivers have been muddy looking for a while. I'm not sure if that is because of the big rains, or if they are like that all the time. At the Steam Boat Arabia Museum in KC, they said there was an old saying about the Missouri River "Too thick to drink, too thin to plough." That seems to fit the Ohio too.
US 50 skirts the south of Cincinnati. This is a peak of the skyline.
This building is in the Linwood neighborhood of Cincinnati. I'm not sure what it used to be, but it looked like a train station. It is across the street from Terry's Turf Club, where we ate our lunch. We shared a table with a nice local couple and they commented that this neighborhood had declined, but people were trying to bring it back.
Terry's Turf Club was featured on Triple D. It's hard to miss with all the neon decorations.
The neon is inside and out. the yellow thing you see is a cooler shaped like a bottle. they had two. This yellow one holds beer and a black one holds soda. There were several clocks too, and not one had the correct time.
This is a cute phrase. They really want to you to cut loose and enjoy. However, the custom is to eat peanuts and throw the shells on the floor, so losing your shoes could be messy.
Talk about messy! This burger was fantastic! Cooked medium and juicy. It is topped with Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, sauteed onions and banana peppers and a scrumptious mango curry sauce. By some miracle, I was able to eat it without spilling on myself. It took many hand washings and swimming tonight for my hands to finally lose the curry scent. If I lived here, I'm sure I would have to make some rule, like "I can only go to Terry's Turf Club once a month!" (Just like I can only have La Atena Mexican food once a week.)
Dwayne had a yummy BLT. The fries were good too, but I didn't get to too many of them because I was occupied with my two-hand burger.
South-east from Cincinnati is a little hamlet called Mariemont. It was so cute, we had to pull over.
There is an inn and some shops and some famous local ice cream, but we were just too full for ice cream. Unfortunately, the shops were not open because it is Sunday. But, we had a nice little walk on the tree-lined street.
Here's what US 50 through Ohio looks like. I may not be very discerning about this, but, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio farmlands really look pretty much the same. I thought we would be going through some Amish areas, but apparently they are more to the north. We did see some Amish shops in Indiana, but they were closed when we drove by on Saturday evening.
It was pretty and pastoral and picturesque, and I admit that I took a good long nap through a lot of it. Dwayne was a little frustrated because we hit a lot of traffic. Not usual traffic, but small town slow downs every few miles. Plus, we didn't figure this out until Ohio, but apparently this weekend is the "Great US 50 Yard Sale." It's a coast to coast yard sale! Google it! So, not only did we have to slow down for each little town, but for all the looky-loos slowing down to scope out the yard sales. I'm wishing I got a few pictures, but we didn't figure out what a big deal it was for a while. We just thought, "People around here must hold yard sales after church. Hmmm."
Here we are crossing into West Virginia.
Here's Dwayne enjoying the pool at the hotel. This is a very nice hotel in Parkersburg WV. Parkersburg is mostly industrial and we passed by the gigantic Dupont Teflon plant on our way into town. Our Lady Box (this is the name of our GPS device) went kind of crazy on our way into town and we couldn't figure it out. When we checked into the hotel we found out that a new section of US 50 had just opened up and many folks report the same issue.
Relaxing at the pool was great after our long day on the road. There is a Red Lobster next to the hotel, so we decided to just walk next door vs. driving someplace more local. I have to admit that it is a good place to visit when on a break from one's healthy life style. Pass the cheese biscuits please...
