Day 7 - We ate like we were in Kansas City!

We left Newton KS and headed towards KC. We had lots more rain, but nothing like yesterday. The TV weather is promising sunny skies and temps in the 80's tomorrow and we hope they are right. As we approached KC, we stopped in Olathe KS to check out Sylas and Maddy's Homemade Ice Cream. We got there about 45 minutes before they opened, so we decided to poke around. And low - there was great rejoicing and great BBQ! We had stumbled upon the Olathe location of Oklahoma Joe's BBQ. The KC location had been featured on Triple D, and according to Anthony Bourdain, this is one of the 13 places in the world where you should eat before you die. The dining gods were smiling upon us today! In fact, I've invented a new superlative phrase for eating well - "Eat like you're in Kansas City!"
We ordered two sandwiches, and they must be the favorites because everyone in ear shot was ordering the same two sandwiches. This is the Z-Man - brisket, provolone and onion rings on a roll. Their sauce is great too.
This one is called Hog Heaven. It has pulled pork and smoked sausage. Yum! We each had half of each sandwich.
Here are some of their BBQ trophies and awards. The walls of the restaurant are lined with them.
If you are ever in Olathe KS or KC MO, don't miss Joe's!
You may have noticed that we didn't have any sides at Joe's. We were saving room for ice cream at Sylas & Maddy's.
Dwayne had Queen of Hearts - Vanilla with raspberry chocolate chips (like those jelly sticks that are dipped in chocolate.)
I had Maddy's Mud - coffee ice cream with brownies and Oreos. Their cones were freshly baked and delicious too. The family makes the ice cream every day.
After our lunch, we headed into Kansas City MO. (Because I'm silly, I waited for the exact moment to say, "Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore!") We headed over to the Country Club Plaza. It is a beautiful shopping district - one of the oldest in the country. The Spanish style reminded me of Santa Barbara.
To get to Country Club Plaza, we drove through several beautiful neighborhoods. It made me wish I had a bike along. Kansas City is big and spread out and it is a community of neighborhoods. Some of the charming streets reminded me of home.
Hello Hermes! There were many statues and fountains. In fact, KC is known as the City of Fountains. I'm hoping to get more pictures when the weather is better.
We went to Stroud's for dinner. According to Zagat, this is the best fried chicken in the country. It is pan fried and served with pan gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, and cinnamon buns. Dwayne chose baked chicken and reported that it was excellent as well. This meal reminded me so much of my Grammy's cooking. The only thing missing was fried okra. For me, the gravy was the big winner. So flavorful!
Here we are, ready to dig in!
These buns were crazy! My mom used to make something like this with pop-n-fresh dough dunked in melted butter and cinnamon sugar. What a decadent end to this rich meal. Too bad we don't have some cattle to drive, or grain to load. This food indicates hard work! I'm enjoying every minute of this splurgey trip, but I will be happy to return to my regular healthy food and exercise. This good news is that we will not be in the car all day tomorrow! Yay! We really need a break. We will be exploring down town, City Market and some of the other attractions of KC. Dwayne has mapped out the book stores and comic book stores too!
