Day 9 - Across the Heartland

Today was a big day. Today proves that we will have the trip we have and not necessarily the trip we planned.

We rolled out of Kansas City and headed towards St. Louis on I-70. We stopped in St. Louis hills at a comic book shop. The neighborhood was very pretty, and looked about the age of our own. I have noticed that many of the buildings in KC and St. Louis are brick - even the high rises. We just don't see this in CA. But, I figure that bricks are the best thing for a tornado and they don't have to worry about the ground giggling on a regular basis.

We stopped for lunch at Piggy's BBQ. It is set up like fast food, but they had a huge smoker in the parking area.
We shared a brisket sandwich and a pulled pork sandwich and some potato salad. The potato salad was made with red potatoes and the skins were left on. It tasted like it was made with sour cream. Yummy! The pulled pork is unlike the one I had yesterday, but still good. Dwayne and I agreed that Oklahoma Joe's is still the BBQ winner.
One of the unexpected things today is that Dwayne had a very strong feeling of unease and was anxious to get out of town. I've learned to heed intuition, so we got out of town and got this picture of the Gateway Arch on our way through. We may never know what we avoided, but we each trust our "Spidey Senses" and so far it has worked. The result of this run through St. Louis is that we ended up driving 10 hours with our short lunch and RR breaks. We drove from KC MO to Bedford Indiana. There aren't many pictures today, and most were taken from the car.
A quick snap of the mighty Mississippi.
Silos. It was wheat and beef country in Kansas. Illinois and Indiana have been corn. Indiana has been more hilly and has more trees.
I think this is Illinois. When we crossed the Wabash river, we crossed into Eastern Standard Time.
This is in Indiana. Very pretty deciduous forests.
We drove 490 miles today. Tomorrow, we'll be heading towards Ohio and Amish country. I'm hoping there will be pie.
