Day 11 - The Virginias and a Tiny bit of Maryland

We crossed through West Virginia, Virginia, the tiny point of Maryland that sticks down into Virginia (7 miles of US 50), then the rest of Virginia. We were hungry for lunch and stopped at Dave's Famous T&L Hot Dogs Oldies Diner. We didn't know until we saw a few more that it is a chain, but it is a local chain. Dwayne had their burger and onion rings.
I had a New York Dog with mustard, grilled onions and sour kraut, and a Chicago dog with mustard, sweet relish, onions, peppers, tomatoes and dill pickles. Pretty darn tasty.
There were lots of workmen covered in mud and many of them ordered the manager's special with everything. I was tempted to order it just to see what it was.
The following are what I could capture of the beautiful countryside. Very pastoral and park like in many places. These pictures are through the Allegheny Mountains. Even though we passed through 4 states worth of farm country, I didn't see many kitchen gardens till we got to this area.
I couldn't resist stopping to snap this sign. Sadly, we were too full for DQ at this point and had to have our cones some miles later at a modern DQ.
This guy made it slow-going down the other side of the mountains. But it had started to rain, it is a 9% grade and some of the turns are marked 15 MPH, so going slow was OK.
I saw many large patches of irises that seemed to have naturalized in some places. I'm thinking that deers must not find them tasty. These were conveniently located in a yard next to the modern DQ and I took these while enjoying a swirl waffle cone.

More scenes from US 50, now leaving the Allegheny Mountains.

Crossing the Shenandoah.
So pretty - just like a post card.

We saw many stone walls like this. Apparently lots of the rich and famous have their country estates in this area. I can't blame them. It's gorgeous.

We stayed in Fairfax Virginia and visited their historic old town for dinner. We ate at Havabite Eatery, which specializes in Greek and Italian dishes. Pop served us and Mom was in the kitchen.
I had the baked meatball special and Dwayne has spaghetti meatballs. We each had a lovely and fresh Greek salad to start.

This is Dwayne's "Spaghetti is a special kind of happy!" face.
This is the historic Fairfax Courthouse, which is still in use.
